If you’d told us a year ago that Oasis’s 1995 song ‘Wonderwall’ would be topping Spotify’s ‘Top 50 – Global’ chart this summer, we’d have assumed the band were playing more concerts – perhaps in Mexico, Brazil and other big-volume streaming markets.
But no. Last week ‘Wonderwall’ was atop Spotify’s daily global chart because of the men’s football World Cup, and specifically its prominence whenever England managed to win a match – with fans and players singing it to one another after the final whistle.
It’s dropped back to third in the chart now, but still on 3.9m daily streams, with the official tournament song ‘Dai Dai’ by Shakira and Burna Boy capitalising on the final weekend’s action to retake top spot with 4.8m daily streams.
The impact of the tournament is backed up by some official stats sent to Music Ally by Spotify.
It says that there have been 172m global streams of ‘soccer-related playlists’ on its service since the start of the tournament – up 275% on the 2022 World Cup. Listeners have created more than 219k of those playlists themselves.
We wrote last week about another unexpected beneficiary of football-mania this month: Norwegian striker Erling Haaland, with a Kygo remix of a rap track he recorded as a teenager topping the chart in his homeland.
