Lila Labs Initiative Animated Collage

UK-based non-profit Lila has launched its latest initiative, Lila Labs. It’s an extension of the organisation’s existing work supporting South Asian artists and industry professionals.

In this case, that means a monthly program of workshops, including an artist trand focusing on the music-making process and all the work that goes around it.

Meanwhile, an industry strand will explore the business side of music “from streaming data and sync to organising a live show”.

“South Asian representation in music is moving forward, but our research shows us very clearly that representation and access are not the same thing,” said Lila founder Vikram Gudi.

“Too many people are still trying to understand how the industry works from the outside. Access to knowledge, relationships and real industry expertise can make a huge difference to whether someone is able to turn talent and ambition into a sustainable career.”

Lila Labs is starting in London, but the organisation says it is keen to expand across the UK in the future. The initiative is informed by Lila’s ‘South Asian Soundcheck’ report, published last October, which explored the challenges facing South Asian musicians and industry pros.
