India’s total on-demand audio and video streams grew by 8% from 235.5b in the first half of 2025 to 254.4b in the second half. We calculated those figures based on the numbers published in Luminate’s 2025 Year-End Music Report, according to which the country generated 489.9b plays during the past 12 months.

That’s a little less than a third of the 1.5 trillion streams tallied by the US, but good enough for the No.2 spot in the entertainment data company’s ranking of overall streaming volume worldwide, which notably does not include the sum for China. Other encouraging news: “net new premium” on-demand streams in India increased by 23.3b year-on-year, which was the fourth-highest growth in the world in terms of absolute numbers.

In volume terms, a lot of the consumption appears to be happening on YouTube, as three Indian tracks are in Luminate’s Global Top 10 Songs chart of 2025 for on-demand video streams but none in the corresponding list for on-demand audio plays.

Among the other India-specific data shared in the report is that 79.2% of on-demand audio and video streams in the country were for tracks by Indian artists, making it the Asian nation where listening habits are the “most local”.

In contrast, superfans—defined as those who engage with artists and their content in five or more ways such as purchasing digital music, attending in-person and/or virtual live performances, and posting about their favourite acts on social media—in India are 23% “more likely to listen to artists from outside their own market when compared with the average India music listener”. Interestingly, Indian superfans’ top five sources of discovery include streaming platforms, social media, TV, films and film soundtracks and friends/relatives, but not short-video clip sites.

Lastly, if you’re wondering why Hindi film music director Pritam showed up in your Spotify Wrapped even though you don’t think you listen to his music that much, know that you’re not alone. The composer is so prolific that he ranks No.9 in Luminate’s list of ‘Songwriters credited most often in top 10K global on-demand audio songs’.
